Ask anyone who has lived on the island five years and they will tell you Canggu has changed twice since they arrived. The surf is still there. So is most of the appeal: cafes that open at six, gyms, coworking, a short ride to two other beaches. What has gone is the space between buildings.

Who ends up here

Mostly people who have already stayed a season and want to stop renting — remote workers, surfers, couples in their thirties who like being able to walk somewhere. Villas dominate, typically two or three bedrooms behind a wall with a pool, on a plot that was agricultural land within living memory.

What to check before you commit

Traffic is the honest complaint: the lanes were never roads, and a short trip can take half an hour at the wrong time of day. Construction noise is the second — buying next to an empty plot means buying next to a future build site, so look at what surrounds you, not only what you are buying. Quieter coast begins a little north, and Seminyak’s older streets sit just to the south.
